Book Review – Everybody’s Fool

by Richard Russo (Allen & Unwin) ISBN 978-1-760-295-332

Everybody’s Fool is set in Bath, a small town in New York. The story, a sequel to Nobody’s Fool, follows the lives of a few mismatched characters, including Donald ‘Sully’ Sullivan who has to come to terms with his bleak life, and Douglas Raymer, a police chief who tumbles from one misfortune to another.

While trying to figure out the identity of his dead wife’s lover, Raymer has to solve the mysterious cases of an escaped cobra, misprinted business cards, and feeling threatened by fellow cop Jerome.

Although the story only spans a couple of days, it’s easy to fall in love with the characters who deal with friendship, love, fear, and strength. I could relate to them easily as they reflected growing up and finding their way in life, as well as the difficult choices people make in life.

With so many characters and all their stories at play, it was easy to get confused but as they became more familiar it was easier to follow their storylines.
