Book Review – Baking With Jackie Cameron

by Jackie Cameron (Penguin) ISBN: 9781485900153

‘Baking is my way of sharing happiness,’ says the award-winning chef in her new cookery book, and she knows how to get her message across with delightful twists on familiar recipes, including Amarula crème brûlée.

With over 80 recipes accompanied by lots of photographs, the book invites you to start in the kitchen straight away. I tried to make the Bar one chocolate cake and it was an instant hit in my family.

After a foreword and an introduction, the book is divided into six chapters: biscuits, breads, cakes, desserts and puddings, pies and tarts and small cakes. Each recipe comes with clear instructions and tips. The ingredients are available in South African grocery stores or maybe even in your garden (finely chopped fresh lavender). The book ends with useful cook’s notes and troubleshooting tips.

My favourites are naartjie muesli chews, the chocolate version of baked Alaska, Baklava and puff pizza tarts, just to name a few.

I can recommend this book to the beginning baker, but also as a supplement to your cookery book library.
