Book Review – After The Fire

Fredrik is 70 years old and has retired to his ancestral home on a remote island in the Swedish archipelago. Awakened suddenly one night to discover his house is ablaze, he somehow manages to escape alive – with the clothes on his back and wearing two left boots. All that remains of his family home is a blackened shell.

As Fredrik was alone on his island, suspicion naturally turns to him, and to his dismay he finds himself under investigation for arson.

Fredrik finds himself at a loss as to his future, as well as to his plans to leave the house to his estranged daughter. But with the help of other inhabitants of these strange islands, Fredrik slowly begins to piece together his life and reaches out to his daughter.

When mysteriously another house erupts in flames Fredrik realises he must discover who this arsonist is, not only to clear his own name but for the sake of other isolated residents.

After The Fire is a final novel by a master Scandinavian crime writer. If you have never read Henning Mankell you will find yourself wanting to go back and read his earlier novels. He will be sadly missed.
