Book Review – A Summer At Sea

by Katie Fforde (Century) ISBN: 9781780890869

After a particularly difficult experience where her very profession is belittled and called into question, Emily, a trained mid-wife, needs an escape. She decides to embark on a summer holiday aboard a steam boat on the Western Isles of Scotland.

Working as a cook aboard the “puffer”, Emily meets the lovely Rebecca and James, and James’s brother Alasdair, the rather handsome local GP. Looking to just have fun for the summer, Emily is determined not to become a cliché, but life has other plans.

As she works aboard the boat, she is drawn more and more into the world of this lovely family and becomes firm friends with Rebecca, as well as the welcoming island inhabitants. To make things complicated, she also finds herself drawn to Alasdair and his delightful daughter Kate as well.

When summer passes, Emily is faced with a terrible dilemma. Could she return to the city, where her dream job now awaits her, or sacrifice all her hard work for a different kind of life to the one that she had planned.
