Frédéric Mistral was a French writer and lexicographer. He was a French poet who spearheaded the 19th-century revival of the Occitan (Provençal) language and literature. In 1904, he shared the Nobel Prize in Literature with José Echegaray y Eizaguirre for his literary and philological contributions. He also devoted 20 years to creating a comprehensive Provençal dictionary, Lou Tresor d’ou Félibrige. Mistral’s volume of memoirs, Memoirs of Mistral, is his best-known work, along with the poem, Mirèio, a Provençal Poem.
