She no longer comes first, nor do the children. The Army has become the most important thing in Dan’s mind. His loyalty to his comrades, to his country, takes over his whole life. 

After the first arrival home, he has to find a way to communicate with his family again. His own father is very worried about the situation and with the best intentions tries to fix up the marriage. Alexa doesn’t know how to cope with this stranger that she loves and almost decides to leave him if he cannot change.

The outside world sees their reunion as a taste of heaven after his months of hell. This novel takes a close look at the home lives of the modern Army. What happens when love and a vocation collide? This story makes you think and realise that an army husband coming home is not all roses. 

There are real barriers they both have to cross. A very well written book about a subject that many generations have had to face.
