Book Review – Finger Dancing

by Sam Manty (Austin & Macauley) 9781849631198 R110

While this book lacks grammatical and spelling accuracy, it has a plot and sincerity that makes up for the blunders.

Sam Manty, a published poet, delves into her first novel and concocts what seems to be a fantasy story with stereotyped characters if you read the blurb on the back of the book.

However, once you delve into Roxi’s life, you start to identify with the insecure Jewish girl who is having an identity crisis. You start to root for her, and understand why her mother is so ‘taut’ and her ‘tall, dark stranger’ is not as ideal as a partner as he looks.

This is not your typical romantic chick lit novel. It delves deeper into philosophical questions, mentions typically South African scenarios and does not have the ending one expects entirely.

A good holiday read, if only you didn’t feel the need to whip out your red pen to make corrections. If this book had been proofread properly, I would have given it 3.5/5.
