Book Review – Demigods and Magicians

Riordan tosses the four main characters from his Kane Chronicles trilogy and the Percy Jackson series into an explosive melting pot of Egyptian and Greek magic.

The book is a collection of three cohesive short stories. The stories themselves are not new and have been available online previously, but this is the first time they are presented together in one volume.

In the first story, The Son of Sobek, Carter Kane and Percy Jackson run into each other while investigating reports of a giant crocodile lurking in the water off Long Island. In The Staff of Serapis, Annabeth Chase and Sadie Kane team up to defeat a recently awoken god with aspirations of world domination. Revelations follow from these two encounters, serious trouble is brewing in both the Egyptian and Greek magic worlds. The four combine their talents and magic, in The Crown of Ptolemy, against an ancient and evil Egyptian magician called Setne.

Each story flows into the next with all the adrenaline-fuelled action and wit that Riordan is known for. There is also a tantalising extract at the end from The Hidden Oracle, the first book in Riordan’s latest series The Trials of Apollo.
