Shmuel Agnon was an Israeli writer and Nobel Prize laureate. He was one of the central figures of modern Hebrew fiction. In English, his works are published under the name S. Y. Agnon. In 1966 he was the co-recipient, with Nelly Sachs, of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
